NORTHPORT, NEW YORK — SEPTEMBER 27, 2014. The Firefly Artists, a popular Long Island artists’ collective, will celebrate the grand-opening of their brand new gallery on Friday, October 17, 2014 at 180 Main Street in Northport, NY. The opening festivities will start at 6 PM and go until the lights go out! There will be plenty of refreshments and a meet-and-greet with member artists.

Prior to opening the space at 180 Main, The Firefly Artists had been housed under the roof of the internationally acclaimed LaMantia Gallery. Both galleries were at a point of trying to grow their businesses and realized they needed to be independent to do it effectively. After building up their business and brand for three and a half years, the Firefly move came at the perfect time. The core group of Firefly Artists was inspired and excited for a move to a larger, more influential gallery.

“We’re all grown up now, and the new space is the perfect fit for us,” says gallery co-founder Kate Sydney, “I think every business reaches this crucial point where you can either decide to stay the same, and grow stale, or you can call on your network of artists and friends and say, ‘Let’s do this!’”

“The move from a 300 to a 1,000 square foot space really gives The Firefly Artists a chance to make a substantial impact on the art scene” says Managing Partner and Firefly photographer, Jennifer Stearns Lau. “We now have room to showcase more artists who are doing original and ground-breaking work and we can have bigger gatherings to bring collectors directly in touch with the local artists they love.”

The new Firefly Gallery supports Northport’s rising image as a place to discover and collect local art. This month, Northport has re-established its popular Art Walk. The Wine Cellar on Main features local artists on a six week rotating basis in its tasting room. Eclectic coffee shop, Caffé Portofino, showcases a different local artist each month along with its artisan baked goods. And, newcomer Gallery 37 has become a place to shop for urban treasures and handmade work from emerging artists. The Firefly Gallery, as a fully-independent space for locals to celebrate local art, is sure to have a lasting impact on the fast-growing art scene in Northport Village.

The mission of The Firefly Artists cooperative is to provide space for artists of varying media to display and sell their art. The gallery is managed by jeweler Kate Sydney and photographer Jennifer Stearns Lau. Current members include painter and renowned print-maker Jim Darcy, award-winning watercolorist Celeste Mauro, botanical artist Julia Zaffer, Northport acrylic painter Demerise Perricone, and encaustic painter/co-founder Cathy Nichols. The Firefly Gallery also showcases rotating works by local artists in a variety of media. For more information visit www.thefireflyartists.com.
